The internship or practicum experience aims to provide professionals-in-training with opportunities to test and expand upon the theoretical foundations of the field gained in the classroom, while also offering them the opportunity to develop interpersonal skills that will aid in the transition from student to working professional. Thus, the internship experience should provide a student with the chance to practice and hone skills relating to field-specific knowledge, and to increase his or her competency in the work environment.
This page aims to provide links to key competencies in archival studies, library science, museum studies, and public history, and also directs faculty, supervisors, and staff to those skills that IMLS has identified as critical for knowledge workers in the 21st century.
