Professional organizations, associations, and societies help historical organizations learn, network, and access professional development. By joining, organizations enhance their learning and create additional opportunities to grow.
Ohio Organizations
Ohio Museums Association: OMA provides professional networking and development with museums at workshops and conferences throughout Ohio.
Society of Ohio Archivists: The Society of Ohio Archivists’ mission is to exchange information, coordinate activities, and improve professional competence in Ohio’s archives and manuscript repositories. Membership in the society is open to the public, and we invite anyone with an interest in archives and manuscripts to join.
Ohio Preservation Council: The Ohio Preservation Council is a broad coalition of Ohio libraries, archives, historical societies, and conservation resources. Its mission is to provide a network for preservation education and to support preservation activities within the state. Membership is open to individuals and institutions.
Ohio Genealogical Society: The Ohio Genealogical Society is the largest state genealogical society in the United States. Its mission is to meet the educational needs of its members and the general public through the acquisition, preservation, and dissemination of genealogical and historical information.
Museum Leadership Exchange: A professional museum leadership organization created as a forum to exchange ideas and vision in order to raise the bar on museum leadership in our region.
Heritage Ohio: As Ohio’s official historic preservation and Main Street organization, Heritage Ohio fosters sustainability and economic development through preservation of historic buildings, revitalization of downtowns and neighborhood commercial districts, and promotion of cultural tourism. Individuals may become members to access full resources.
Ohio River National Freedom Corridor: A non-profit heritage tourism association of interested sites, organizations and communities which collaborate to promote and connect programs and develop partnerships to educate the public about the historical significance of the Underground Railroad (UGRR) and its historical legacy in modern communities. Membership is open to individuals, organizations, and communities.
Ohio Association of Nonprofit Organizations: The Ohio Association of Nonprofit Organizations (OANO) is the only statewide membership association that reflects the full diversity of the nonprofit sector in Ohio. OANO members include organizations of all sizes and mission areas, including arts and culture; health and human services; community development; and many other types of organizations.
Emerging Museum Professionals
Ohio has five local chapters associated with the National Emerging Museum Professionals Network. Although geared toward early-career professionals, EMP chapters provide many events and resources open to and helpful for professionals at all stages of their careers.
