After the Civil War, over 1 million Union veterans mustered out and returned to civilian life. Within a short time, many of those men found themselves missing the camaraderie and brotherhood of camp in which they had spent the last few years. It was largely out of this desire to stay connected that organizations like the Grand Army of the Republic or G.A.R. were formed.
