Roan Smothers will speak on Longtown. Mr. Smothers in researching his family genealogy found that his mother’s families’ origins were from Longtown, in Darke County Ohio. Through his research, he discovered the Clemens and Alexander’s families were the first settlers of Longtown. He joined the Union Literary Institute Preservation Society (ULIPS) and is currently the President of the ULIPS and have expanded the mission of the ULIPS to save all the remaining structures of Longtown. He wrote and nominate the James and Sophia Clemens Farmstead in Darke County and the Union Literary Institute to the National Register of Historic Places and to the National Park Service’s Network to Freedom Program as an Underground Railroad.
