When last we left our heroine on February 15, Jane Woods Hoge was emerging from the 1833 cholera apocalypse. Moving forward, Jane and James lobby for state aid to educate Ohio’s Deaf and Blind. The 1830s are a riotous, tumultuous time with violent attacks on free speech and the press. Arguments against slave-holding disrupt common discourse. In 1838, the Presbyterian Church itself undergoes a bitter, messy split into two irreconcilable factions. In 1843 the Millerites stir up anxiety with charted calculations proving the end of the world and the Second Coming of Christ is at hand. Yet, unbeknownst to all, lurking in the accumulated muck and filth, the dread Asiatic cholera is about to strike once again.
