Museum Relevance: Exhibitions for Social Justice Webinar

FreeElena Gonzales, author of “Exhibitions for Social Justice,” will discuss how museums can reach the whole population, rather than a dwindling half of it, how museums can develop more honest and functional relationships with communities that typically have not visited, and what curatorial strategies and tactics are most effective when museums want to build empathy, long lasting memories, and inspiration for visitors. She will share examples of institutions that are embracing opportunities to become more relevant by doing work within the galleries to more equitably distribute risks and rewards in society.
Elena Gonzales, PhD, is an independent scholar focusing on curatorial work for social justice and museums’ roles in society today. She is the author of “Exhibitions for Social Justice” from Routledge’s Museum Meanings Series (2019). She has curated exhibitions since 2006 and has taught curatorial studies since 2010. She guides the planning of an annual schedule of more than 20 exhibitions per year at the Evanston Art Center. Gonzales is co-editor of “Museums and Civic Discourse: History, Current Practice, and Future Prospects,” a digital public humanities project forthcoming from Greenhouse Studios.
