The tragic shootings at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston last June precipitated a national outcry against the Confederate flag. State leaders in Alabama and South Carolina removed it from capitol grounds. Walmart and other retailers discontinued merchandise bearing the flag.
