Lyrasis Class: Digitization for Small Institutions

Description: Participants will work with the instructor to answer a series of questions designed to help them start a digitization program. The class is based on a series of units: Getting Started; Digital Capture and Quality Control; Hardware, Software, Metadata, and Web Interface decisions; Practical Planning Decisions: In-house or Outsourced? Staffing and Budgeting; and Collaborative Digitization.
Learning Outcomes:

  • Define criteria for project planning
  • Identify various challenges and solutions with digitization in a small institution
  • Recommend digitization workflow and planning solutions when starting a digital program

Instructor: Annie Peterson

Annie Peterson is the Preservation Services Librarian at LYRASIS. Since 2012, she was the Preservation Librarian at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. At Tulane she provided collection care services to the library’s varied general and special collections and was the principal investigator of an IMLS National Leadership Planning Grant for establishing collaborative preservation services in New Orleans. Annie received her MLIS from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she worked in both preservation and conservation. She has also worked in preservation at Yale University, George Blood Audio and Video, and the University of California, Los Angeles.

Intended Audience: This class is open to all interested.
Frequency: offered 2 times a year, Summer & Winter

This class is funded in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Division of Preservation and Access.

Registrations for this class must be received at least 48 hours before the class date. This class is designed for individual participation; each individual must register.
